Super Bowl Ad: Can you spell G-R-O-S-S?

On Sunday night’s Super Bowl between the 49ers and the Chiefs, we are running a commercial highlighting the chemicals used in “so-called“ plant-based meat. The ad takes place at a school spelling bee, except these aren’t ordinary words.

The words the students are spelling aren’t your average words you would find in the dictionary. No, these words are chemicals you would find in synthetic meat. Needless to say, some of the bee’s participants have trouble even pronouncing the words–let alone spelling them.

Unbeknownst to many, plant-based meats are ultra-processed foods. The NOVA food classification system says ultra-processed foods are created by a series of industrial techniques and processes; in the case of synthetic meat, it’s to mimic the taste and look of real meat.  And according to the National Institute of Health, ultra-processed foods can cause overeating and weight gain.

Ingredients that can be found in synthetic meats include methylcellulose, which is commonly used in laxatives and lubricant. Some products use propylene glycol, also used in antifreeze, and titanium dioxide, used in paint. You can find more in our ingredient list on this site.

Needless to say, if you are trying to eat “clean,” fake meats don’t fit the bill. If you want to know more, click here to compare ingredients of real meat and synthetic meats.
